They walk. It's numbing, the monotonous step, step, step. But they can't stop; not now, not ever. Driven on by fear and pain, all they can do is keep the rhythm and not break rank.

There's no stopping for food. They don't need it, but if they did, there would be no time. Night, day, twilight, dawn, it doesn't matter; they can't stop moving. Phantom whispers of the wind caress their faces, and still they walk. If anyone looks at them, they are unseen; eyes pass through them as if they don't exist. As if their troubles, their pains, their desperation, don't exist. Like the burden of traveling without end is not real.

Cursed: that's what they are. Forever forced to stumble along, shouldering their rifles and hoisting up ammunition belts, waiting for orders that will never come. Still they trudge along, thinking, "Just one more hill."

Once, they felt love, grief, fear; anything anyone would feel. Now, all that remains is longing. A cruel, vicious emptiness that tears them apart and pieces them back together as shells of themselves, a feeling that destroys and scatters anything individual. They never dwell anywhere for too long, haunting no site twice if they can help it. An eternity of road waits for them.

Doomed to walk the earth, the ghosts of the soldiers march on.

FIN.
I'm so proud of this. :iconrlytearplz: Like, honest to god, I'm so happy. I WROTE SOMETHING ORIGINAL.
Basically, just ask me questions if you're confused. I'd love to answer them. :)

Aw, thank you! It's only a one-shot ^^; So, if you have specific questions, ask away, but I'm afraid there's no sequel.

Yeah.

*looks up pondering possible scenarios. character names such as Charles Archer and Jefferson Sparks pop briefly into focus as the two of them gaze into a field of broken spirits fighting among themselves. as each one falls, they disappear and are never seen again. Archer and Sparks stand feeling fear and sadness as each drop a tear and warm liquid craws down their pants* hmm... *raises hand and gives a grin that could only be found on a child who just found the answer to life, the universe, and everything* 42, may I have the privilege of making a squeal?

PS: If the thought process is incorrect please forgive me. My mind tends to do random spirits of creativity that are more random than, well, that flying twinky that always follows me around.

Yeah.

Um... I'm... not quite sure I follow... it's simply a company of soldiers, only they've all been killed right before battle in an ambush, so they can never rest in peace, just walk the earth.

Yeah.
Sorry, I had a burst of thought when I read your reply. Is it a specific battle/war and can I make a larger piece of literature for you?
Yeah.

No problem ^_^
Um, no specific battle; I don't even really know when this is placed. It could be the Civil War or it could be a thousand years into the future.
And sure, I'd love to see a larger piece of literature! Just make sure to credit me if you use any of this. :)
